In 2011, with the creation of the Master of Professional Studies in Letters and Arts, we began graduate-level activities in this area at the State University of Amazonas (UEA). Following a CAPES triennial evaluation (2010-2012), a set of actions undertaken by the program resulted in a report recommending that the Program's profile be more closely aligned with an Academic Master’s degree. This change was implemented, thereby reinforcing the concept that PPGLA had first envisioned for the profile of its graduates. At that time, the lines of research were reoriented under a single area of concentration, forming a new APCN – now for an Academic Master’s program. This new structure further enhanced the interdisciplinary aspect by bringing together initiatives with similar motivations regarding the treatment and purpose of the themes, objects, and phenomena under scientific observation.

We therefore launched the program in the month following CAPES's recommendation, which suggested migrating the class of 2015 to the academic track.
Regarding the program's presence in the Northern region of Brazil, it responded to a long-standing demand. At the time, there were far fewer than the current 11 master’s and 2 doctoral programs in the field of Linguistics and Literature. In the state of Amazonas, graduate programs in Language Studies are relatively recent, having been re-established at UFAM in 2010 and at UEA in 2011.
As a result, the PPGLA selection processes have always attracted a significant number of applicants, averaging around 100 candidates competing for 20 spots, with plans to increase this number in the 2019 selection call. Thus, the inclusion of PPGLA in the region has brought positive outcomes, notably the local training of professionals, including 18 faculty members from UEA itself and more than twice that number from public education networks (municipal and state), as well as artists and writers.
One of the distinguishing features of our proposal is its inclusion of all three areas within the broader field of Linguistics, Literature, and the Arts. The interdisciplinarity we foster extends to related disciplines, supporting a broader ontological process. In this way, artistic and literary expressions—as well as their linguistic foundations—can be examined from multiple perspectives.

General and specific objectives
The Graduate Program in Language and Arts at the State University of Amazonas aims to train researchers and professionals in the fields of Linguistics, Literature, and the Arts, therefore contributing to the development of a critical and professional mass in that region of Brazil.
