Areas of concentration

Artistic, Literary, and Linguistic Representation and Interpretation

This area of concentration will focus on the aesthetic phenomenon in its literary, linguistic, musicological, visual, plastic, and performing forms, through cultural, historical, theoretical, analytical, and creative approaches. These will be examined across various levels of production: the genesis of the work, the relationship between critique and creation, reception, archiving, and restoration. To this end, interdisciplinary relationships will be prioritized as a means of interpretation, whether within the fields of literary, linguistic, and artistic studies or in their connections with related disciplines.

Lines of research

1) Archive, Memory, and Interpretation

This line of research encompasses literary and artistic studies based on a dialectical perspective, particularly in what concerns creation, critical and theoretical instrumentalization, and their interdisciplinary relations – for example, in dialogue with history, cultural studies, enunciative, discursive, and (auto)biography theories. It will prioritize: the analytical observation of literary and artistic creation as a product of critical and theoretical reflection; the reception of artistic and literary works; editorial reproduction or other forms of consumption involving other types of media; and the investigation of primary archives and unique sources. Other projects that focus on reframing archives, diverse sources, and tangible and intangible heritage objects, as well as those that involve some level of organization, analysis, and interpretation of literary and artistic works, will also be welcomed.

2) Language, Discourse, and Social Practices

This line of research expects studies on linguistic description and analysis, as well as the sociocultural mechanisms involved in the use of language and their applicability in the field of language education. It focuses on theories and analyses of texts, genres, discourses, and utterances within different social practices. In addition, this line of research also includes projects that are dedicated to aspects of musical language or artistic expressions that are associated with it and share theoretical support and investigative scope with the theoretical framework of linguistics and related fields.

3) Theory, Criticism, and Creation Process

This research line aims to work with critical studies based on theoretical premises structured in paradigms that support creative processes and their resulting products. It includes analytical case studies or those inspired by art theories, as well as critical theories and their interpretative application, along with practical aspects of artistic expressions supported by a guiding theoretical framework. Some examples include projects focused on the conception or interpretation of works from one (or more) artistic and literary expressions, approached in an interdisciplinary way, allowing for informed practice (drawing from History, Sociology, Philosophy, etc.), or consolidated creative expression. In this sense, this line covers both dynamic expressions and those that result in finalized works. It thus requires the researcher enrolled in the program to carry out a practical performance of the chosen expression, supported by a necessary reflective framework.
