The State University of Amazonas maintains several international cooperation agreements with which the Graduate Program in Language and Arts (PPGLA) is involved. These agreements were established through the program’s collaboration with groups of faculty and researchers engaged in ongoing partnerships. In some cases, faculty members from the program serve as the institutional representatives for these agreements.

Higher Institute of Educational Science of Cuanza-Sul (ISCED) - Angola
The partnership between the State University of Amazonas (UEA) and the Higher Institute of Educational Science of Cuanza-Sul (ISCED) was signed in 2024. However, this agreement stems from an already existing partnership between the University of Katyavala Bwila and the State University of Amazonas, which dates from 2018. Upon Angola’s reorganization of its higher education institutions, in 2020 the University of Katyavala Bwila had the ISCED of Cuanza-Sul separated from its organizational units. In that way, following Presidential Decree No. 285/20 of October 29th, ISCED then became an autonomous higher education institute. Given the continuity of academic relationships, this new cooperation remains in effect, grounded in reciprocity and the development of research in Brazil – especially in the state of Amazonas – and in Angola/Cuanza-Sul. It aims at promoting knowledge and culture, as well as strengthening their stricto sensu graduate programs. At ISCED, this agreement is coordinated by Professor Arlinda Conceição dos Santos, Ph.D. At UEA, it is led by Professor Renata Beatriz Brandespin Rolon, Ph.D., a faculty member who also works in the master's and doctoral programs in Educational Sciences at ISCED/Sumbe. stricto sensu graduate education.

University of Katyavala Bwila – Angola
The agreement between the State University of Amazonas (UEA) and the University of Katyavala Bwila (UKB) was signed in 2018. Throughout time, there has been a productive exchange between both institutions. As a result, the activities developed through this cooperation include the organization of academic events, book publications, and teaching of graduate courses in the Master's Program in Educational Sciences at UKB/ISCED, as well as the supervision of a master's dissertation. Faculty members from PPGLA have also participated as visiting professors. The cooperation remains active, grounded in reciprocity, and in the development of research in Brazil—especially in the Amazon region, where we are located—and in Angola (Benguela/Sumbe), aiming to promote knowledge and culture and to strengthen stricto sensu graduate education. At UEA, the cooperation is coordinated by Professor Renata Beatriz Brandespin Rolon, Ph.D. At UKB, the coordinator is Professor Ermelinda Monteiro da Silva Cardoso, Ph.D.

University of Aveiro – Portugal
In 2022, as an answer to a goal that aims to establish scientific dialogues with international networks, the State University of Amazonas (UEA) and the University of Aveiro (UA) signed a cooperation agreement. Facilitated by the Graduate Program in Languages and Arts (PPGLA/UEA), this cooperation supports: the exchange of faculty, students, staff, and academic researchers; joint research activities and publications; participation in seminars and academic meetings; exchange of academic materials and other information; joint programs that may result in dual degrees; short-term or modular academic programs. Appointed by UEA, Professor Renata Beatriz Brandespin Rolon, Ph.D., a faculty member at PPGLA, is responsible for scientific coordination. At UA, the administrative and scientific coordination is overseen by Professor Artur Manuel Soares da Silva, Ph.D.

University of Salamanca – Spain
The cooperation agreement with the University of Salamanca, Spain, was one of the first ones signed by PPGLA. It dates from 2012 when the program still had a professional nature, instead of an academic one. Renewed in 2024 through the Brazilian Studies Center, the agreement expanded its scope, which previously focused on musicological studies and concerts featuring musicians from both institutions. Future actions are expected to include other creative expressions, which are developed within the PPGLA and of interest to CEB-USAL. The main outcome of this agreement is the SIMIbA (Ibero-American Music Symposium), which has had eight editions in places such as Salamanca, Manaus, Belo Horizonte, and Lisbon, thus helping in the promotion of other institutional partnerships. In Spain, this agreement has been coordinated by Professors Gonçaço Dacal, José Máximo Leza Cruz, and, currently, José Manuel Santos. In Brazil, it is represented by Professor Márcio Páscoa, Ph.D.

Castelo Branco Polytechnic Institution – Portugal
The agreement signed in 2024 was preceded by a series of ongoing actions dating back to 2016 when they were carried out under a Technical Cooperation Agreement. The new legal framework provides broader possibilities for action, without losing sight of faculty exchanges between Portugal and Brazil for masterclasses, workshops, concerts, and participation in various academically visible activities. Currently, the agreement is coordinated on the Portuguese side by Professors Luiza Tender and Antônio Carrilho, both members of the stricto sensu graduate education at IPCB, and on the Brazilian side it is represented by Professor Márcio Páscoa.

NOVA University of Lisbon – Portugal
Currently being renewed, the agreement initially signed with NOVA University Lisbon in 2015 was established to support technical cooperation on several projects led by the Portuguese institution. These include the development of the Thematic History of Music in Portugal and Brazil and the Cataloguing of the Musical Collection of the Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa in Portugal. Professor Márcio Páscoa has regularly participated on behalf of PPGLA, alongside occasional contributions from other local members. On the Portuguese side, the agreement is represented by the CESEM team (Center for the Study of Sociology and Aesthetics of Music), which also hosted an edition of SIMIbA—an initiative born from the partnership between PPGLA-UEA and CEB-USAL.

King’s College London – London
The agreement with the State University of Amazonas (UEA), signed through initiatives of the Graduate Program in Languages and Arts (PPGLA) was established around the project Irene: Conflict Resolution Training sessions with indigenous women activists in Amazonia (Brazil). The Project, which also involves Universidad de La Sabana (Colombia) makes use of classical texts and rhetorical techniques – such as the Socratic method – to support Indigenous communities in the Amazon in finding peaceful ways for conflict resolution. The Project has adapted and translated an exercise book into a comic book format from the Irene Peace Building to train Indigenous women activities as mediators, equipping them on how to handle conflict within their communities in the Upper Rio Negro region. These activists, in turn, replicate the training in their communities, helping to resolve conflicts related to land, water, and gender-based violence. By connecting classical texts with contemporary issues, Irene has laid the foundation for long-term peacebuilding efforts in a vulnerable and underserved region. The project has a website available for initial reference: https://proyectoirene.pages.dev/recursos-didacticos/guia-socratica/pt/

G-CUB
An important international mobility initiative in which PPGLA participates is the partnership with the International Cooperation Group of Brazilian Universities (G-CUB). During the 2021-2024 quadriennial evaluating period, PPGLA welcomed three foreign students to its master's degree program, from Peru, Mozambique, and Timor. These students have a CAPES master's degree scholarship to stay in the city and, upon arriving in Manaus, are entitled to housing at the Student House for a period of three months, while the scholarship implementation process is completed. This initiative is also aligned with affirmative action, and reservation, as it prioritizes students from vulnerable geopolitical contexts. Places for the doctoral program will also soon be offered through this policy.
